I dont think it will catch fire but I doubt the cells will take a charge. I used this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Duratrax-Onyx-7-2V-1800mAh-NiCd-Battery-Pack-w-Tamiya-Connector-DTXC2010-/190895342240.. beware the battery pack has unique security screws that are unlike the cart and console ones. I had to file the tips on a pair of needle nose pliers but maybe you could find the proper bit. all you need to do is cut the connector off the original and solder the wires together. You could prob just use a crimp connector too. I replaced the screws with standard phillips screws from a junk ps3

GGTV is another option, keep the stock lcd or ditch it and have a/v out

I was dicking with mine for quite a bit to get it to work right. Glad I could help. Was bored one day so I made this monstrosity. Pokemon Blue>Transfer Pak>Pokemon Stadium>n64>S-video>Trinitron>Composite>GG tv tuner>GG

The powerback is on it too.

I modded the battery pack, and a powerback + rechargeable AA's.
play time: about as long as long as a gb on AA's. no ragrets
