If I'm being as efficient as possible, I start with Metal Man as his weapon is the most useful in the game.

My normal order if I'm not challenging myself:
Metal > Bubble > Wood > Flash > Air > Crash > Heat > Quick

MM2 is interesting as it's the only game in the main six on the NES that let you be so fluid with your order. It all has to do with each boss having a few really strong weaknesses. You know what's fun? Using Air on Heat. Or Heat on Wood. Or Quick on Metal. Or Bubble on Flash. While not the most effective, it can be fun to shake things up.

Mega Man by far. I love Mario and Sanic, but the MM2-4 OSTs blow them out of the water. Metal Man, Pharaoh Man, and Spark Man's themes are all incredible example of NES music.

Yeah, easily the best part of the pic. I saved it a few years back in an alt art thread on /b/. I wonder if the artist did the other entries. We have 2 and 4 here. Would love to see one for 3.

Flash Stopper has just barely enough energy. You can fuck up once, but that's about it. Even with a turbo button, it's close. Skull Shields on Dive Man is a big example. If you lose more than one, you can't use just those. Dive Missiles use up a shield, so you have to be careful. Drill Bomb only has like, 8 uses. Toad Man takes 7, I believe. If he jumps over more than one, you're boned.

It's not a rage inducing gripe, I suppose. 1 gave you enough, 2 generally gave you more than enough. The only thing close on 2 is Flash, but you can just finish off Quickman with Crash Bombs. I usually just use CBs at this point. 3 had a good balance. The only thing that could really derp was Top Spin. I've hit Shadowman with two of them and had no energy left and his life only down by 1/3.
