This is something that only Zelda 1 and 2 did. The world felt mysterious and largely unexplored. The few people you do encounter are either in very small towns or safe encampments and don't know what's beyond their immediate borders. It has the vibe that you're nuts to go wandering around with nothing but a sword and shield. Link's green tunic, as iconic as it became, was really just bog standard fairy tale peasant clothes. ALTTP broke this by making it a kingdom and guards chasing you everywhere. You still have the dungeons that imply they're ancient and built by some long forgotten civilization but now they're within the reach of the local government as opposed to some mysterious thing you happen to stumble upon.

BOTW restores a lot of this but one thing I miss about the franchise is the idea that the world is a vast unknown landscape that's only minimally understood. Even ALTTP loses this by sticking a giant castle in the middle of the map. Zelda 1 and 2 feel legitimately mysterious. The few people you encounter are commonfolk just trying to get by and you're wandering into the frontier that people probably haven't set foot in for millennia. Then you stumble into dungeons that SOMEONE must have built but their identity and intentions are lost to history.

He's not wrong, though. The artwork of the original Zelda look like something that would be animated by Toei.
