Try playing them all in release order. From 1st to Burst. It's honestly quite impressive how this series grew over time. The only game I didn't enjoy was Twin because of the unusually awful music.

Darius->II->Gaiden

The first two games were legitimately impressive for their time too, but good luck trying to convince ignorant HG101 kiddies of that.

Yeah, Gaiden is rather frustrating in that regard. w/o turbofire you're just making your hand suffer for no good reason whereas with it, you're just trivializing the entire game. Still one of my all-time favorites, so it's a very minor flaw regardless.

All the Darius games are fantastic provided you ignore the crappy ports the first two games had.
This includes Twin.
