I would say the biggest flaw of the genre is that in order to get good in a shmup, you have to memorize a lot. In most games there is simply little room for improvisation at high levels.

That's one of the things I love about Guwange, which is a huge exception to this rule. You have to memorize a lot too, but in this game it's more about excecution and reflexes rather than pattern memorization, I'd say.
