There's a slight chance that it could also be メタルマックス (Metal Max), a series of RPGs that was released by Data East.
It'd be interesting to see Arino tackle this one, the freedom of Mounted/Unmounted battles, with tanks and other stuff a la Xenogears makes this game quite entertaining and hard.

Sure, they say Metafight to abbreviate 超惑星戦記メタファイト (Chou Wakusei Senki Metafight), but they do the same with everything (Super Famicom = Su Fami, Smash Brothers = Suma Bura, etc). "Meta" is just narrowing the search on a still-large sea of opportunities.
