I need some opinions.

What do you guys think of the Xak series?
Got interested due to

and its minute similarities to Ys.

I'm kinda having a hard time liking it due to the music.

Brandish: Action-RPG dungeon-crawler. You'll either love or hate the camera control and the attack methods. A lot of challenge if you can learn to "deal" with them. Menus are English, and shop items are displayed with icons. Probably the best version until the PSP version came out and "fixed" the game's issues.

Popful Mail: A Magical Adventure: Satisfying Falcom side-scroller with lots of charm and panache. There is backtracking so I need a FAQ to know when to go back to a town for something, though it's not super bad like Auleria. Also in English on the Sega-CD. Menus are English and shops have icons.

Xak I&II: Competent Ys clones without the polish of the Ys games (which have a bit of lacking-polish of their own!). Enjoyable music and you move so fast it's a breeze zipping around the country-side blowing through enemies like some type of linebacker out of hell.

Unfortunately the balancing of the game is kinda shit. One early boss won't be hurt until you are a specific level, and by the time you've grinded to that level, you are pretty OP for the rest of the game. I hit the level cap of Xak I a full hour before its final boss... It's the type of game where first, everything kills you; a few levels later, nothing kills you. Fun, but a bit disappointing (the bosses are a joke!). Need a FAQ in a few spots, but most of progression can be solved talking to everyone in town and answering yes (except for a few spots!!! Watch out!)

Xak Gaiden: Fray in Magical Adventure - barely qualifies; I mean you get gold and can shop for items, but it's more an action game. Cute fun, though. Very easy, but not in a disappointing way.

It's not -quite- like that (though MOST things kill you in one hit), but yeah. I actually played the JPN version, and it's such a sloppy game, I stopped caring. Bringing up the menu often leaves artifacts on the screen, hit detection is shit, and the screen doesn't scroll until your char is 80% to the right.

Chronicles+ would provide variety, given that it's much older and simpler in some ways, and you'd have Origin after that for learning the backstory of ! & II.

>tfw no Xak remakes in the foreseeable future

Everything about Xak's cover is great. At least it has quality scans, unlike some other games from the era with great boxes.
