My submission is 1999 PC game "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri". I think it is not only one of, if not the best, retro games of all time, but of non-retro games as well. This also qualifies it as one game better than Fallout >>10717130 .
While other games beat it in individual aspects, as an overall package, it's a masterpiece in that it unites all its components with a cohesiveness rarely seen in gaming. A compelling and deeply thought out blend of semi-hard science fiction and political philosophy, with elegant game mechanics, varied victory conditions and strategies, and a passionate modding community. Can be played all night long without you noticing the time going by. Contains a lot of food for thought once you're done playing.
