You should be able to jump into Puyo Puyo without any Madou knowledge, and into most Puyo Puyo games without Japanese knowledge.

Puyo Puyo Tsu is what all the later ones are compared against. It's a good place to learn the general rules, but the difficulty spike might be a bit higher than you expect.

Puyo Pop on the GBA is a good diorama of the early series in terms of gameplay and lore, if you absolutely want English text.

The Fever games and modern games have neat spins on the gameplay, more in-depth tutorials, and are a bit more accessible for EOPs.

Arle is pretty nice but Draco is a total qt.
