Good to see someone else playing Ketsui. I've been learning to score on the 1st loop as well.

Horizontals tend to have level design and stage hazards and the like while verticals tend not to.
Verticals tend to move fast and have tons of bullets while horizontals tend to be a slower.

I love level design, and I love go fast dodging, so... cop-out answer, but it depends on what I'm in the mood for. I can't really say I enjoy one more than the other, and honestly, if I were to make a list of my favorite shmups, I think it would come out about 50/50 horis and verts.

Yeah, I gotta back this up. This is exactly what I was going to say.
I'll add that pretty much no one, not even hardcore shmup fans, play some shmup for the first time and beat it effortlessly in just a couple tries. At least, not unless the game is fairly easy.
Any videos you see of some guy blazing through some shooter and making it look effortless took TONS of off-camera practice. Don't be discouraged because you aren't playing as well as someone who played a particular game regularly for months on end.
Just find some shmup you like, even (maybe even especially) if it kicks your ass, and just keep trying. Keep getting a little bit further every time. Keep improving as a player. That's the draw of playing shmups, not just getting through all the content or bragging about 1ccing some game.
