So until yesterday, I thought the first Shantae game came out on the Commodore 64. I was roundly, fairly abused by all my game bros.

I seriously can't get this out of my head, though - what fucking game am I thinking of? Is there some platforming franchise SIMILAR to Shantae that goes back farther than 2002, to older computer/console systems?

In the former case, it would be Shantae. I've wanted to get it since I saw an ad in Nintendo Power back in the day, but my local stores never got a copy. It's out there, but I'm simply not willing to pay ebay prices.

Not retro, but still 8-bit

I wanted to play the first Shantae game because i want to get into the one for steam (and plus there's another one coming up soon, for steam as well), and holy fucking shit.

Dark souls got nothing on this game.
It's so hard dude!
You only have 3 hearts, locations between safe spots like towns and shit are big and filled with enemies that spawn on top of you, hurting you instantly.

There are snake pits that spawn snakes at a rate that is impossible for you to go past it without getting hurt.

The soundtrack is great and for being a gameboy color game the graphics are beautiful and fluid, and the dancing mode is really fun.

But holy shit it's hard man!

I primarily collect PS1 games and accessories but boy did I love the GBC as a kid. Some time ago I got aware of Shantae. I tried it out (not with an original cartridge of course) and holy moly this game is fun as hell. But why the heck is this so fucking expensive? 200 bucks for the cartridge alone, up to 1300 bucks for the game CIB.

I read a bit about it and it apparently got released one year after the GBA BUT it still was considered a hit as far as I know, so I don't understand why it has become so expensive.
