Games that are considered "essential" are usually not cheap. But I recommend Mystical Ninja starring Goemon, the loose cart shouldn't be too expensive. Now the sequel, that's another story.

It depends on many things, and a lot of people will never agree about early 3D. Some people find low-poly graphics to be charming, others thing it's just ugly.
I personally think anything can look good with the appropiate art direction and displaying them at the original resolution and ratio on a CRT.
Goemon games come to mind as some 5th gen games I still think look very charming.

You're clearly a PS1 fanboy.

PS1 definitely has good looking games, but so does the N64. And at its best, N64 looked better than PS1. This isn't even a fair comparison since N64 came out 2 years later and had more advanced tech.

Clever devs could make good looking games on any console, and lazy devs could do shit on any console as well, but claiming all PS1 games look better than all n64 games is just wrong, and extremely biased.

I would like to play the SNES and the DS Goemon games, but have they been translated?
