(The 20L5 isn't free, it's a historical name I used here a few years ago. The free stuff is in >>4901642 )

With apologies for the poor quality. It's an old pic but the only one I have handy. That black alligator clip/test lead thing is clipped to a grounding point, which is in this case a spring between the tension band on the tube itself and some point on the other side of the tube I think. That point is hooked to the PCB somehow or another at a ground point.
This is an apple IIe composite monitor btw

Like this, sans binderclips if avoidable.

I removed the entire neck assembly in my PVM-20L5 to get a convergence strip permalloy unstuck from the deflection yoke. There's my authority.

The black lead is clipped to the wire hooked to the spring the other guy mentioned on the chassis.
