none of the puzzles in RE2 were especially challenging, only 1 and 3 had any challenging puzzles, and I think RE4's knight puzzle is on par with that.
RE4 was the natural evolution of the franchise and fixed many problems the series had.

RE4 is considered a classic and the best RE game by a wide majority of people and today remains the most well received RE title after the franchise became stagnant with the 3rd entry.
