This.
If possible it could be worth trying to let the merc get last hit on a boss, but for just generally killing stuff you're overall better off killing stuff faster with slightly less MF than waiting 5x longer to get an extra 50% or whatever from your merc.

as you can see getting around 100-200 mf is what benefits you the most and anything after that you should only go for if you don't sacrifice too much killing speed.

yep. look up MrLlamaSC's Guide to MF on youtube for a detailed explanation.
Pic related shows how much MF% affects drop rates. The most important is the first 100MF and after 200MF it suffers diminishing returns.
Best thing you can do is slap some topaz into slotted helms and body armor near the start of the game and go from there.
There's a low lvl dagger call Gull that has 100% MF that might be worth trying to get.

on your last question, not entirely sure.
if you're hell then keep doin high MF andy/baal/meph runs I guess to try and get some better gloves. At least if you pair with the belt you get 40% MF and if you have Vidala's Feet/Neck lying around you can get another 50%.
Slap in 4 perfect topaz in a body and 3 into a helm and you should have 250%ish MF just from that.

1000% MF only doubles your drop chance of uniques over having around 170% MF.
Not to mention you just have to get lucky on the dice roll of what TYPE of item drops too.

Probabilities are probabilities. Just that MF makes stuff more likely to drop doesn't mean it's going to drop.

>200-250 is a sweet spot, higher you get to much magic/rare stuff imo
That seems to be the deal, though it's magic items whose drop rate increases in proportion to the others as you get more MF.
