I think that will work. Let me mock up a level layout with some lame graphics to see.

I assume >>2453735 is yours too. That's looking pretty cool. Absolutely you can split the torso and legs into two sprites. That's exactly how Super Metroid works. You can take it a step further and layer things like arms and torsos on top of each other in a single frame of your sprite. Once again, SM does this with Samus' torso and arms, although the torso+arms is drawn as one sprite.
