Well, sometimes you can, depends on your present company.

I mean, it could, but most people wouldn't care, and personally I think gun people should take the distinction less seriously outside of more focused and important contexts and situations.

I mean, it really doesn't actually matter that Doom calls magazines clips, because it's Doom. I think a far more egregious misuse of terms is "Chaingun", which Doom's machinegun isn't (and unlike clips and magazines, where there's some blurring of lines, Gatling guns and chain guns are very distinctly different). And it still doesn't matter, because of the kind of game that Doom is, and they just called it a chaingun because they thought that sounded metal.
