The variety of colors and locales is what got me more interested in 2 over 1. In addition, I was invested into the Ultima 7 storyline which Underworld 2 has a connection to its Guardian villain.

S'ok. Just what I remembered of a Sega booth one year of CES.

All $550 of this year has already been spent months ago.

They are fun experiences, but it is more convenient now that they are streamed with a lot of coverage now. Though there is something to seeing the games in front of you. As I remember there was one pillar on I think it was EA's floorspace which had individual islands of of 4 ienclosed in a space with one having a large wall of 4x4 screens which felt like about 18 feet tall showing a sizzle reel of games, the only of which I remembered was Wing Commander Academy. . I wasn't a fan of EA titles, so I only paid attention to one island: Origin's. They had Wing Commander Academy, Strike Commander, some other I don''t remember, and the one that caught my eye: Shadow Caster. Back then my 386DX-40 ran Wolf3D fine but not Doom, and Shadow Caster looked so much like Wolf3D that ic caught my interest. I was impressed with its fog effects and textured floors/ceilings which was not in Wolf3D and it was made by a pretty cool upstart company called Raven Software which had really good artists. Playing it there inspired me to actually get Shadow Caster when it was released. Sure it is not any amazing game now, but it was cool with its morph effects and graphics at the time, but being there told me to give it a chance. It did its job at the show. I guess arcades are a way you can experience the games of tomorrow in a showcase setting too.

I played through the original older builds and I remember the more satisfying or heavy the meal the less people would mention they are hungry. Say shanks of steaks will last much longer than just giving them grapes. I think sleeping moves the timer forward faster, so your party members will seem like they are hungry again sooner. The DLC addon, Forge of Virtue, has a goblet which is always full and will feed your party members was a workaround solution in its day. I forgot where the goblet was but I think it was laying around somewhere in the home of the blind crazy mage that lived on the island, and he doesn't mind if you take things. Just be thankful it was not programmed into the game that they need to poop too (but I think there were places that NPCs did do it and you can sit in those outhouses and pretend they were doing number 2).

In my head cannon, I always thought Batling was granted immortality through The Guardian. I remember it took the Forge of Virtue DLC to activate the event to be able to kill Lord British, but it would still refuse to kill Batlin. I do know if I cast the Armageddon spell, even Batlin survives and confess his allegiance to The Guardian but is dejected that The Guardian wouldn't want to conquer the world now with everyone dead.

I only played the 7s and 8 (and started the Underworld games). I really loved the 7s in their day and still think it was a sort of precursor to the modern Elder Scrolls and Bethesda Fallout games. In those days, I thought it was interesting that you never got to defeat The Guardian, only prevent or stall his arrival, and that was conclusive enough; after some tome to now, I think I would prefer a more conclusive ending.

I only got 8 because I loved the 7 games so much. However, 8 is quite a departure and different from what I was used to, but I still liked it, but nowhere near as much as I did 7, but I did see 8 as sort of a forefather to Diablo which was great.

I copied 6, and I couldn't get into it back then. I think maybe the controls and/or graphics just put me off after having played the 7s.

I have not tried yet. Even in those days, I delineated games for DOS and "productivity" for Windows. So I have not tried yet. It'll be a day of me giving various titles a shot.

I got Star Control 2 playing by just using Extended memory only, no mouse and no CD-ROM. I love the music, and I love seeing the waveform on the lower right. Sure the free Ur-Quan Masters is great, but this is how I played it back in the day (with the small window for a short field of view on planet deployment, making for a more challenging experience).

Also got Halloween Harry working with sound (it didn't need the extra first 640k memory, just had do manually set blaster settings). So great to get STUDIO.EXE working so I can jam to the game's soundtrack (plus I love the player, showing which channels are used, and the waveform). Playing it with the D-pad in >>4064467 does feel strange, as I used to play it with the ALPS switches keyboard and I lost some control but it is great to play again.

Tyrian works great, and of course I too love its music visualization for its sound test.

As you can see, music can convince me to get games. As that is what sold me to the average-ish game of Halloween Harry back then.

Going to see if I can get Raptor working next.
Before I start more challenging titles for the system. What other games has some cool music for me to enjoy?

(Thinking of installing that Tetra Composer sample)

Who or what is a Spoony? What makes that authoritative on Ultima 8?

I enjoyed 8, but didn't feel it lived up to the 7s. I also had that same thought Diablo looked a lot of like Ultima 8 back then.

Admittedly, the platforming in 8 wasn't good, but to me, the game was interesting in a different way. Being dropped into a conquered world of the Guardian's, you learned quickly of this oppressive new world and the abilities of the four elements. One would think to get out they should fulfill the destiny of the Avatar and master the four elements, but no, fuck you, you only get Earth after performing unspeakable things to the dead, Water is hereditary, Fire hates your guts and will insta-kill you for any petty crime you commit, and Air is just bullshit. No, in this game you do not master the elements and bring balance to the world and free it from the Guardian, you just fucking leave in a "fuck this place" manner. I think that is pretty interesting and somewhat unexpected for me at the time.

As mentioned, the gameplay with the platforming is awkward, as is the norm with determining height and distance in an isometric view. It is way more linear than what I was used to with Ultima 7: The Black Gate, and feeling more restrictive than the linearity of Serpent Isle, as the game would crash badly on any deviation from the path. The game did emphasize its many frames of animation (for its day), and the graphics were pretty appealing to me. In the end, maybe it is all nostalgia I am speaking about, since I have not gone back to play the game once I beat it.

Another anon somehow noticed I have/kept the original release and not until last year did someone mention on this board there is a patch for 8. I do not recall jumping to be a nightmare, as I just had to deal with it. Is there anything else this patch fixes?

>>3981932
I had no idea about this. The only expansion I ever got for 8 is the speech pack. Good stuff.

>What are your favorite DOS computer games, /vr/?
I was a fanboy of Origin back in the day. Bullfrog and Microprose too.

>What are some obscure DOS games you've enjoyed?
Even though I had it on the SNES. Someone gave me a copy of this strange Chinese bootleg Street Fighter 2 (world warrior), which just copied/digitized the sprites/backtrounds (the floor did not linescroll, and they just took pictures, so you can see strange edges not matching perspective as the background was just a large static image). The original just had fucking 4 variations of Ryu and 4 variations of Guile with arcing/heat-seeking/slow fireballs like those of the Rainbow edition arcades. Later someone gave me an updated version which had all 8 characters selectable. Mirror Matches would tend to have one slightly greener character instead of the new colors of Championship Edition. Execution of moves did not involve diagonals, so a dragon punch for example on the keyboard would be direction arrow tapped towards-down-towards then mapped punch button (hadouken was just tap down-towards then assigned punch). Yes, even though the SNES version was closer to the arcade, I still had fun with this hack/bootleg DOS version. I was truly amused with bad games. How's that for obscure? I have no clue how my friends found this oddity.

It looked exactly like this, but not Korean. The names and everything was in English. Also did not have the strange "new" speech, mostly strangely captured sounds from the SNES version.

Never played this version, but I lose my shit just watching it:

That was not a power word tought to me in the good book of The Fellowship! So much wonder on the Serpent Isle, fuck the tyrant Lord British and his "virtues".

Some friends Iolo and Shamino are, rushing in to watch but not helping out ...

I never got the clue book to Ultima Underworld. I only read through those official Origin cluebooks for the Ultima 7 games were written by a character in the game world which made it interesting (along with the very cool illustrations). I wish I bought them.as the hintbooks feel like they add to the lore of the games.

>>3782079
I think they still do stuff like this now, they just call them "special," "collector's," "limited," etc. editions these days and ask for a premium price. Was nice as all the extra junk was to make one feel it was worth not bootlegging the game (still did as I cannot afford all the good stuff).

KNOW that Brittania has entered into a new age of enlightenment.

I loved the 7 games. I have not played any Ultima prior to 7, but in its day it was one of my first computer RPGs I've played. I thought it was pretty interesting that by the end of the original, you didn't beat the enemy, rather just prevented the arrival. So an overarching enemy seemed quite epic to me. The game, I felt, was like Morrowind (Oblivion and Skyrim) before they arrived, in that you can practically go anywhere, and do as you see fit. Go on a murder spree such that later towns may have guards ready for you, interact with practically anything (make bread!), converse with NPCs that go about their daily lives (go to work, eat, sleep, etc.), even party members seemed to have some of their own moral code (kill or steal too much, and they can disapprove). It was back in (96?) pretty amazing stuff to me. I had to get the expansions (add-on), and was super hyped for 7-part 2.

Yeah, the cloth maps, trinkets, and "manuals" (and even hint books) written as if they belonged in the game world were neat. I think modern special or limited editions sort of carry on that old tradition in some ways with artbooks and insight into the worlds the developers created.

Yeah, Solar Winds scratched my itch for more Star Control 2, which was one of my most favorite games on the platform at the time. The music in Solar Winds was pretty great too as I remember. Even though the "universe" opens up after registering, it somehow felt like just another chapter making a grand total of only 2 chapters to the game (unlike Wolf3D having 6 at the time, Doom with 3, etc.).

I vaguely remember a scammer NPC in Solar Winds chapter 1,but I don't think it was the hyperdrive. The game design does not provide the player much of an out if they deplete their fuel, at least according to my hazy memory. I did mostly stick with just the points where NPCs directed me, instead of much exploration on my own. I have been meaning to break out my old Underground-Gamer golden torrent DVD burns and set up my emulation machine with DOSBOX and SCUMMVM.

I enjoyed the games in their day. It was impressive unlike Catacombs 3D or Wolfenstein 3D where the ground was flat, there can be angled and heights to the floors. I got the second one because I really, really enjoyed 7, and the second Underworld continued on from the first half of 7 bridging into part 2. Plus the second one was more colorful with different zones. I found the Guardian a compelling villain (never did play 9, so I have no clue if he was ever defeated).

I have yet to try Gone Home, is that a not /vr/ game I am thinking of?

Origin games like id games pushed for more and more powerful hardware from PCs, but they were still quite an experience. I was a fan of their releases (not pictured, my Privateer game with speech pack).

Sadly, I do not facebook or Pokémon Go , or whatever the kids do these days. What I meant by my last post was "either there are other big box collectors buying up all the good stuff, or no one ever bought any to be sold in my area"
