How did they develop NES games? I mean the overall workflow is what I'm curious about, not just the technical specifics of the end results. Articles, etc. never talk about the former.

I know what they used for the final product -- writing their games entirely in 6502 Assembly due to the NES's very low hardware specifications -- but considering Assembly requires so much more concentration and focus and it's easier to completely mess things up and overlook tiny but crucial details, did developers first prototype games in C (which would have been slower, but "I expect this to do that when it's given X" is easier to comprehend and test) before they ultimately coded their final product in Assembly?
