Just make them fall straight down, even that would look better.

Also the falling down sprite combined with the low frame rate makes it look like they splash midair
I certainly thought that was the case when I first looked att the video.
If you can't remove it without also removing the splash on the ground, then just removing splash outright would be better IMO
