The XZR (Exile) games take place, sorta mostly, in the middle east.

They star Sadler, a Syrian assassin who goes about killing various deities and whatnot. The story has a lot of fedora-tipping edge to it given its religious bent, but I like it because of how bonkers it gets mixing up various cultures, time periods, and religions into one bizarre mess (druids, greek gods, crusaders, yokai, indian deities, and more).

Design-wise, it's kinda sloppy (you can definitely tell it started as a Japanese PC game), but it's interesting enough for one playthrough on a PC Engine emulator (or the Genesis, though that version has some limitations due to it being on a cart vs. CD), just to enjoy the story and world.

XZR 2 and XZR 3 were released in the west as Exile and Exile: Wicked Phenomenon.

Warning: Wicked Phenomenon is a broken, buggy, and unfinished game (in the Japan original!) and has a hilariously bad Working Designs localization which, due to a memory leak, rendered the game virtually unbeatable by exponentially increasing all enemy stats at the expense of your own.

If you want some real unknown gems, check out anything published by Renovation for the Genesis. Renovation was the U.S. branch of Telenet Japan, so these games were published in the U.S. in a unique moment in time where extremely Japanese software was getting published on the Genesis that never would've been released here before or since.

Of any of this stuff, you have to check out Exile:
