Mother 1 = Peanuts
Mother 2 = 90s Nickelodeon
Mother 3 = Ghibli
I love all 3

It's a reference to the Metropolis movie. Yeah, a robot.

I've never read any side book or supplementary material, I only read the instruction manual which talks a little bit more about the enemies and the world, but not much. What I like about Mother 1 is its more minimalist approach at story telling, then going all out at the end. Which fits the slogan of "Don't cry until the ending".
So whatever problem you might find about books, I don't know, I just like the game's story as it's presented in the game.

Yes, if you haven't play Mother 1 first. It's a great 8-bit RPG, and playing it will make the main antagonist on Mother 2 much more meaningful.

That's why 8-bit RPGs are the best, precisely.

You didn't read my post carefully. I was talking purely about gameplay mechanics.

This is so amazing. Bumping this legendary thread.

Also, my small contribution, I scanned this from the original Mother game, and someone over at Starmen.net was kind enough to translate.

It's not hard man, it's just the usual 8bit RPG with random encounter, never played Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy before? Mother 1 aint' that bad.

I think the story is worth it, but if you're not enjoying the trip, don't force your way in.

It's a technically impressive game for a Famicom game, as you said, the map is gigantic.
Soundtrack is also great, while not as variated as Mother 2's, every single tune in Mother 1 is memorable and fun to listen to all the time, doesn't get old. It's great when only 1 party member remains after a battle, and you get to hear Pollyanna again after listening to Bein' Friends for most of the game.

I think it's an essential 8 bit RPG, and should be played before playing Earthbound, but for most people, it's the black sheep of the series. The game is too open-ended and doesn't give you obvious directions, so many people without patience get lost easily, or end up in places with high level enemies and can't proggress. Doesn't help that, in general, most people only play RPGs from the 4th gen on wards, and aren't used to older ones.

Another thing that's remarkable about Mother is that it allowed 8-direction movement, something that wasn't even a standard in RPGs in the 4th gen.

years ago when I got the game I scanned the whole enemy list and posted it to Starmen forums, and one dude quickly translated it.

I still don't see any logic, how is it not a good game? I think the whole trilogy is worth playing.
