Even OpenGL doesn't work? Get GZDoom if you haven't already, it's ZDoom with an optional true 3D renderer.

Also, m_yaw and m_pitch in console can fine tune what you think is comfortable there.

ZDoom's method of freelook is the same as Heretic's, pic related. Freelook in the software renderer is a hack of the raycasting engine.

vid_renderer 1 = GL renderer
vid_renderer 0 = Software ZDoom renderer

Freelook in the software renderer's only possible as a trick inherited from Heretic, pic related

Also, see if the latest devbuild treats you better, since every mod needs a devbuild these days anyway.

The distortion of the Software (normal ZDoom) renderer is because of the "hack" it uses to achieve freelook in a raycasting engine. It's the same method pioneered in Heretic and adapted into ZDoom.

It's because freelook is an illusion taking advantage of how the raycasting engine renders. You know the Windows 95 maze screensaver? Basically, same method. "When first published, Doom was revolutionary and almost unique in its ability to provide a fast texture-mapped 3D environment on contemporary hardware — late-model 386 and early 486 PCs, without specialised 3D graphics hardware, running at clock speeds of around 25-33MHz."

"Like the Doom engine, the Build engine represents its world on a two-dimensional grid using closed 2D shapes called sectors, and uses simple flat objects called sprites to populate the world geometry with objects."

That's just how it's always been done in games since Heretic. It's a limitation of the raycasting rendering technique, if you want to use a true 3d renderer, go git GZdoom.

Don't worry, they're very stable. Haven't had one crash on me yet.
