Because PVMs are getting more rare and expensive, and enthusiasts would prefer that if you're going to be buying them up that you at least have enough passion to do some research on your own behalf. There are a lot of hipsters and bandwagoners in this hobby, and the notion is that a PVM is "wasted" on someone who just wants one because they overheard it was definitely the best way to play retro games in some internet video, and that it's uneducated consumers like that who are driving up prices on them.
