/vr/ - Retro Games

Are there any good romhacks for Final Fantasy on the NES? There are a shitload out there, both on romhacking.net and in random websites, but I'm never sure on which ones are actually good. I especially despise the ones that don't do anything to fixbugs or the thief.

I always wanted to get into rpgs, but I just can't stand the random battles system. Are there some rpg that is not so heavily combat based and more focused on story?

Unapologetically in my top 3 games of the series.

I want something to play today. How long should it take me to beat FF1 on the NES? Looking to play the original for difficulty + the remakes really bring out how dated it is.

Hi /vr/, I have a quick question, if anybody has the time to answer. I'm about to start the first Final Fantasy for the first time (I've played a tiny bit of it once before but never more than an hour) and I was wondering what you guys would recommend as the optimal way of experiencing this game for the first time? Is it one of those games like the first two Dragon Quests where there's a remake that could be considered worth playing over the original? Or is the NES version objectively superior?

Also, the Chaos Shrine theme is god damn fantastic.

Can this be a thread where us old farts who grew up in 8 bit or earlier feel special about ourselves for being there since the beginning of franchises that are still around?

FF1 (most influential game of all time for me NES version)

Still waiting for Faxanadu 2.... but nobody remember faxanadu
