What is it about this man that makes people seethe?

Did they try translating word for word. Or are there some phrases/words that can't be put into english? I know that the main character in the first Dragon quest game had two names Roto/Loto, what are some other situations that happened for other games?

What do you think of Ted Woolsey's translations? To my understanding, it's a mixed opinions kind of thing, where his translations for games like Chrono Trigger were considered too deviant from the original script and a little too goofy, but I personally always liked the flavor he added to his localizations. If I had to choose between a stiff literal translation and a more liberal translation with more pop and personality, I'll take the latter.
