I claim SD3

>I still have to check out "SNES Reboot" for Dragonfall.
That piece of shit is nothing like the SNES version, are you kidding me? If it had a world like the SNES version then it might actually have been good. It's just an XCOM clone that is mediocre at best.

Can you read 65816 assembly? If not, start reading this:
https://wiki.nesdev.com/w/images/7/76/Programmanual.pdf

The way to hack a video game throughly is to tie what you know to what you don't know, rinse, and repeat. So where do you find that initial traction? You look for code that manipulates hardware registers, because you have a manual dedicated to detailing how they work.
http://www.romhacking.net/documents/226/

To know where the best place to start, you need to understand how a game functions. It's really simple. A game is typically designed to compute a frame, and then wait for the chance to update video memory with the results. Video memory can only be updated by the CPU during blanking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blanking_(video) ) because the GPU is accessing video memory to draw the screen otherwise. The vertical blank (V-blank) period is particularly important because it is relatively long, and so lots of data can be updated. In fact, a non-maskable interrupt (NMI) is dedicated to informing the CPU of V-blank. In this way, graphic updates are nearly entirely contained within the NMI routine.

Thus, the place to start is the NMI routine. You need to disassemble it. You can find it's address somewhere in the vector table at $00:FFE0.

Disassembling the NMI gives you lots of useful feedback. You can quickly identify where object data is, trace it to find what routines are used to draw sprites, and use this knowledge to start understanding game entity programming. You can see where updates to backgrounds take place, which may help you, say, tie a HUD drawing routine to the variables it is displaying, like health or score.

In addition, isolating the main game loop is easy. It should only be a few lines of code long. The simplest loop would just load the current game mode, execute a program to compute the frame for that mode, and wait for NMI. Being able to identify game mode programs is not only easy, but gives you access to the game engine.

It's a shame really. Of course many of these (early) mobile games were trash but some of them were cool and now they are lost forever and nobody will be able to emulate them.

Rise of Mana suffers from a similar fate, although there is some sort of offline version and the game wasn't also very good.

I sometimes wonder why Seiken Densetsu is left to rot now or why the series even had to suffer through all these mediocre sequels and spin-offs. It really lacks director that cares.

That's a pretty solid first time combo. That was mine too.

Play as many different combos as possible, and play the characters differently everytime; the game has a lot of replay value because the team toss ups can be so different.

As for the best, there is only one: Hawk, Riese, Kevin.

Both Hawk and Kevin are the only players that hit twice per attack. Hawk has some of the best end classes in the game (Nightblade comes to mind), while Kevin turns into a werewolf at night to boost his already insane damage output.

Riese has stat buff/debuff magic, which may seem boring, but in this game is devastating.

Throw in some Poto Oils from the black market for 10xMulti-target Cure spells, and maybe some claws for elemental attacks, and you have a team that can waste any boss in just a few minutes.

The key is that while magic is fun, and the animations are badass, the DPS is really low, and unlike SoM, SD3 pauses the game during spell animations, which slows combat down A LOT.

> The art style (specifically colour) looks a little dull when compared to Secret of Mana. Also, the character animations are waayyy too exaggerated.
If you play the game enough, you'll realize it is one of the greatest achievements on the SNES from both an graphic and music perspective. Not to say SoM isn't great, but SD3 has some seriously good sprite work and special effects, and really pushed the system hard.

They both are terrific games that I've played several times.

I've played SD3 many more times than SoM (15+ vs 4+). It has much higher replay value because you pick 3 out of 6 characters when you start the game, and each character has 4 final classes, so the variety of teams is immense. The dialog is a lot better too. The biggest downside to SD3 is that magic freezes the game when it fires off, unlike in SoM where you could keep moving. The graphics and music are arguably some of the best on the system too. It has a lot of bugs in it, but they have never gotten in the way of my enjoyment of the game.

Terranigma is also a treat. It plays like a cross between SoM and Zelda; the action is a lot better integrated than SoM or Zelda, but you don't get any other tools other than your trusty spear, so the puzzles are more akin to SoM. The story is fantastic (ok, so the human part loses some of the magic), and has one of the best endings of any video game (minus the last 3 seconds). The only downsides of Terranigma is that magic is completely worthless.

Don't worry about which is better. Play both of them, because you'd be missing out if you didn't.

PS: I'd suggest start with SD3. After a play thru hit up Terranigma. If you liked SD3, then go back and try a different party.

PPS: The best story in SD3 concerns Hawk and Reise (your choice of main character affects which final dungeon you get). The best melee characters are Hawk and Kevin. Magic is cool, but slows the pace of the game considerably.

Not retro. Not hacking. Please refrain.

I think it might be simple, although it could be very buggy. Mario's code probably checks what current power up he's got and executes the relevant code. It might be as easy as getting the cape Mario routine to call the "launch fire ball" subroutine in the fire Mario code. Finding these programs shouldn't be impossible. Then it (might) be as easy as inserting a single subroutine. Should be fun.
