If it was 1994 I would play the vasayan pack but it would not give me the same feeling that the doom game would give me.
It would clearly be some advanced VR magic in that day, but to be clear it doesnt look better or worse than doom does. It just looks Different and it reminds me very much of VR and crazy stuff like The Lawnmower Man from back then. Except without the goggles or suits.

I would play both interchangeably. But because the first one is 100% impossible to do any kind of modding on (in 1994) I would still be pulling out Dpaint2 and trying to mimic the pixel looks of the original.
This is from someone who lived and played back then, I was a teen but I was still around and it gave me alot of inspiration and motivation to get into digital art back then. My first art program after DPaint2 was Aldus Photostyler which was like paint shop pro.

This is saying a fuckhell of alot. The vasayan mod pack is so bad that even in the 90s as a kid into tech and graphics I would've approached the prospect as something interesting, but ultimately not end-all-be-all and would get bored of it despite having no comparisons to it at the time.
Quake 1 would still blow it out of the water even at lower resolutions, when it came out.

That too. The damn computer is the more interesting part.
> it has HOW MUCH RAM you say?
But with no possible interfacing with existing tech at that time, except the remote possibility of an ethernet cable.
And because of the very unusual and random way tech/business develops over time there's no guarantee that 5-8 years later the USB standard would come out with the same specifications.
So however nice the system is, there actually isnt anything you can do with it more than is already on it. Its alien technology bretty much. And 20 years later might not even be compatable.

There was a huge revolving debate about it but basically what one guy said was
> "There's a 2:1 damage and health ratio between Doom and Quake"
And also some roleplay stuff he reasoned about how the shotgun shells in quake were shit, like 20 gauge, so even at a 2:1 ratio thats why they would still do less damage than doom shells.
IDK I can see an Ogre having 400 health in doom and a Shambler having 1200. It would take about as long to put them down with doom weapons I think.

Somebody else made a Vore for doom that was rendered very well for transition to sprites, and they made the firepods do 40 damage even though in quake they did 20. It felt about right.
