>Got Fester's Quest for Christmas from my brother a year ago and didn't get around to playing it
>Cleaning all my NES carts and finally booted it up for the first time in like 20 years
>Hey this doesn't seem so bad. The music is good and the graphics and controls are decent.
>2 hits and your dead
>Dying sends you back to the start of the game world
>essential consumables like healing and anti-paralysis potions can only be purchased from specific family members and require immense backtracking to restock, and you have very limited storage capacity for each
>half the enemies are fucking invincible, and the other half take way too many hits
>Enemy respawns are completely broken and it makes just walking down the street a button-mash frenzy
>only one gun in the game isn't a broken mess and if you accidentally pick up an "upgrade" pickup you're fucked until you find a "downgrade" pickup

Holy hell this game makes me mad. Now I remember why my brother would cuss like a sailor when he played it. I actually reached a boss battle and of course I ran out of health and couldn't equip a potion fast enough.

I have concluded that Fester's Quest is meant to be an in-universe video game created by Uncle Fester. The absurd premise makes perfect sense in that context, as does the broken and unfair gameplay.

Okay, this game isn't that bad.

Yes, it has some problems. The graphics aren't very good, there are no checkpoints, the items and buildings aren't very obvious at first, the whip is useless, Fester isn't that fast, even if you are at normal speed.

If these problems were fixed, it would definitely be much better. Hell, I bet a lot of people didn't realize how a lot of the items worked, at it isn't that bad, mostly, once you know.

In the PAL version you can shoot through walls, which is already a huge step up, since the bullets usually just hit them.

Sunsoft were one of the best NES developers. This is an enjoyable game if you "get" it, but it could be a great game if they fixed a lot of stuff.

It isn't based on the revival movie since it came out two years before it, so really, who did they think was clamoring for this game?

I didn't know you could increase your life bar in Fester's Quest until I read about it on a FAQ

I'm the guy who rented Gilligan's Island. I had Fester's Quest. Actually, it's a weird story.

OK so in 6th grade I was like one of those kids who was bullied by everyone and there was another kid in my class like that too, his name was Eric. Well, we decide to borrow games, I let him borrow my Mega-Man 3 and I borrowed his Fester's Quest.

Well, like a week or so later he doesn't show up to school. And around that time my parents split up and my mom, my sister and I moved back to our homestate, so I didn't find any of this out until later. But it turned out he killed himself, and apparently I was mentioned in his suicide note and he apparently may have had a homosexual crush on me, I don't even fucking wanna know. But the thing that bothered me the most is that I never got my Mega Man 3 back and was stuck with Fester's Quest. I eventually traded that Fester's Quest for Little League World Series with some kid in my new class who didn't commit suicide. I didn't want to be stuck with the cursed Fester's Quest cartridge from the suicide kid.

So that's my Fester's Quest story, I tell it anytime Fester's Quest is mentioned and people don't know how to react. I also sometimes tell it when Mega Man 3 is mentioned, but usually I just talk about how Whistle Concert/Protoman's theme is my favorite song from the NES era of game music.
