It's a legitimately good game, probably one of my favorites on Saturn next to NiGHTS and Sonic R. I grew up with the Genesis version, but the enhanced visuals and Richard Jacques soundtrack add a lot to the game. And of course the new Special Spages.

After playing probably over a dozen shmups on Saturn, Border Down, Chaos Field, and Ikaruga were like a breath of fresh air to me. Finally an actual step up from 16-bit

I'm still waiting for them to fix Yaba Sanshiro 2 since the latest update made everything unplayable on my device, which used to run everything at full speed even at 2x and 3x resolutions. No clue what they did or why

Pretty much it's like Sonic 3D Blast but slower and you collect keys instead of Flickies. Personally I don't hate it, if it was anything besides a Sonic game most people would probably enjoy it, admittedly though it's far from what most people would expect from a proper Sonic game

I prefer it over N64 but not nearly as much as PS1 or Dreamcast. N64 didn't even get Street Fighter or Mega Man X4 which is kind of sad considering its predecessor. SEGA CD will always be the true 2D powerhouse to me, though.

Sonic and Knuckles are more fun to play imo. Sad this game is stuck on Saturn and GameCube

Not him but the load times are annoying, I do think the Saturn version has much better aesthetics though. Music I'd call it a tie.

That describes a lot of Saturn games in general. A lot of them are just okay imo but you'll still have fun with it. Protip, start with the first party games and Capcom games before getting into anything else.

Coming from someone who plays mostly Saturn's arcade ports (I rarely touch RPG's) that's long to me. I'm willing to give it a shot if I can free up enough space on my device for it. Also been planning to play the Macross game, Wolf Fang, and some of the sports titles as it's the only genre I haven't quite covered yet

It's fine aside from certain games that make them disappear almost instantly during boss battles for no reason...

Well I gave it a shot, found junk ones auctioning for next to nothing but they ended up selling at just slightly higher than I was willing to pay. At least now I have a better idea of what to expect to pay for one, hopefully I can still land one by the end of the summer, if not it's no biggie. I can still emulate all of my games using my TV stick or my Chromebook anyway. Really just want it for sentimental/nostalgic reasons and nothing else.

It's not in that pic but Sonic R is actually better on PC, there's way more options for things like weather and a day/night cycle, better models/animations (especially for Amy), and a couple of other improvements. Sonic CD also got the full quality FMV opening and ending on PC which the original SEGA CD couldn't handle. This is how I first played both of these games before I even knew about SEGA CD (I did know about Saturn though, just never got one). It seems 3D Blast is the only one that was slightly worse as it has a different Special Stage from the Saturn version, but still mostly the same otherwise

Going back to the 2D era, platformers were usually either single screen (like Donkey Kong) or linear (like Super Mario Bros). Action adventure have always been non linear and usually top down (like Zelda), often with more story elements. With games like Metroid platformers became less linear, but still usually side scrolling.

It wasn't until the 3D era when lines started to become blurred between action adventure and platform games, and even then action adventure games are usually known to be less linear and more combat- and exploration-focused.

Sonic 3D Blast
Nights Into Dreams
Sonic R
Virtual-On
Pandemonium
Mega Man X4
Die Hard Arcade
Street Fighter Collection
SEGA Ages
Guardian Heroes
Wing Arms
Magic Knight Rayearth

In my experience it doesn't really excel in any particular area. Maybe Japanese puzzlers or fighting games? I ended up preferring SEGA CD and Turbo CD (and yes PS1) for shmups and platformers. Admittedly have not tried many of the sports games on it yet. It's not a terrible console but its overall quality and "cool factor" are kind of hilariously overstated

It should've just been part of the main game. I really feel like Saturn is the only console that can get away with these weird filler releases and people act like they're amazing games. Imagine if they released the Genesis with three slightly different versions of Sonic 1 instead of actual sequels. Experimentation is great, sometimes I want actual full games though, not just demos, compilations, CG collections etc.
