It's a series that gets progessively better with each iteration. Honestly I would say skip the first, there's nothing it does that BoF2 doesn't do better -- play the GBA version that doesn't have the incredibad SNES translation. BoF3 is nice but suffers from poor pacing, and the beginning eight hours or so is a slog; it gets much better after that. BoF4 has very lovely graphics and music, and probably the best cast out of any of the games. The story is pretty compelling without resorting to melodrama, and there are some real feels to be had. It's an excellent game with a ton of content.

Honestly, if you don't want to spend a ton of time playing them, I'd skip 1 and 3. I think the fourth game is the best, although I know some people maintain 3 is the one.

Also BoF5 mostly ditched the formula, but is an incredible game with some really interesting mechanics. It's in my top 10 GOAT, but it has a fair number of detractors. YMMV
