Splitfish is one option I know of. I like the analog stick a lot, that there's three shoulder buttons, and that it's wireless, but I wish it had two more face buttons, and I also wish that the DPad wasn't the WORST DPad in the universe. It's good enough for Doom (GzDoom, Crispy Doom), Quake (QuakeSpasm), Duke Nukem 3D (EDuke32), Half-Life, etc, though there's some games/sourceports which will not recognize gamepads at all, or will only recognize old serial port gamepads, so there's not all that much you can do there.

Has an optional mode where you can make the analog stick do WASD input, but obviously that's not really that good for anything (at least I can't think of anything), it's like playing the Super Mario 64DS with the 3DS circlepad and pretending that you're actually having analog input, but you're not.
Anyway, once you get used to this thing, it's comfortable as fuck for Doom and Quake, very smooth and precise movement, the exact direction and exact amount of speed, for Doom you can just leave Always Run on and if you ever need to move slow you just use the stick accordingly.

As said though, there's room for improvement and I wish there were other options on the market.

I use one of these + a mouse for my FPS needs.

Here's my weird ass:
>stick for Moving
>click it for Crouch Toggle
>lower face button for Use
>upper face button for Auto-Map
>second shoulder button for muh Flashlight (first and third are usually bound for something mod related)
>dpad for Inventory Management, thankfully I don't have to use it much though, because it's a fucking terrible dpad

In my right hand (so, my mouse, with freelook):
>left click for Fire
>right click for Jump
>scrolling mousewheel for Weapon Selection
>clicking scroll wheel for Zoom/Aim
>forward thumb button for Alt-Fire
>rear thumb button for Reload

Breh, just work the strafing into your aiming, works better than you think.
That said, a mouse, even if just for turning, IS superior.

I'm a freak, so I use one of these with a wireless mouse.

Back in the day, mouse and keyboard all the way, but now I use one of these, because consoles made me too addicted to using analog sticks for movement, smooth 360 analog movement, together with mouse freelook.

It's a bit weird at first, but when you get used to it, you can really move in very flexible ways.
I think I'm also the only weirdo I've come across who actually uses something like this.

Neat. What's custom about them?

>>4489051
Well moving with the keyboard, then turning (or freelooking, depending on situation and port), and shooting with the mouse.

I'm one of those weird persons who plays with a mouse and pic related and thinks it's the next step in FPS gaming (and people avoid making eye contact with me because they look at it, then look at me), but I'd be interested in what other people who don't play with straight WASD+Mouse do. Like there has to be some who play with straight up gamepads, even on PC, some probably play with other unconventional means.

Like, is there someone out there who plays with a trackball instead of a mouse?

Guess you're no god after all.

But to be honest, I had played some console FPS for a time, then went back to PC for some Doom, and noticed I wasn't at all comfortable with WASD. Mouse was just fine, but I missed the nuances and freedom of a good analog stick (didn't help that my laptop has a shitty keyboard).

So I got one of these, and never looked back.

I really like the feel of an analog stick for movement.

Gamepad is acceptable, providing the controls are set up right.

Keyboard + Mouse is better and how it was originally played.

My personal favorite is an analog stick in my left hand, and my mouse in the right hand.

>>3581381
In one way I agree, in that a gamepad (at least a modern one) is more ergonomic and designed for games.
You can use a keyboard, of course, but my laptop has a shitty keyboard which really isn't that comfortable and has kind of janky keys.

>>3581398
Analog sticks are not nearly as fast and precise for aiming, no.

>if it had a mouse for aiming and turning
Not for Metroid Prime, but these things exist for PC, PS3 and 360 (don't know if they've made them for new ones), you can have the analog stick for movement, then you pair with a compatible mouse (a special mouse would be used for the console ones, but for PC you can use any mouse you want).

I think analog movement is smoother and more precise than WASD keys, as well as more gradual (allowing for fine motion), but analog sticks for actual aiming is only passable at best, a mouse is always better.

This thing in left hand:
>Move with analog stick.
>Click it to toggle crouch (when applicable)
>DPad for inventory items (when applicable)
>Lowest shoulder button is flashlight (autoloaded .pk3)
>button above stick toggles map
>button below DPad is use button

Then a mouse in right hand, freelook:
>fire with left click
>jump with right click (when applicable)
>wheel scrolls through weapons
>clicking wheel is zoom/sights (when applicable)
>forward thumb button is alt fire (when applicable)
>rear thumb button is reload (when applicable)

I play with one of these, you use it with your mouse in your other hand.

Works really well, I like the freedom of having full 360 degree analog stick movement, but at the same time, having the precision.

The product is really just a 5/10 or 6/10 execution (while the analog stick is really very good, the dpad is complete shit), but I think the idea is 10/10 and I would like to see other companies do the same idea, maybe they can do a better product.

That said, I think modern gamepads work for Doom, like a Playstation or XBox controller.
They have two sticks, enough for moving and turning/looking, the DPad works for selecting weapons, you have all the shoulder buttons you could want, pick one for shooting, enough face buttons for running and opening doors/pressing buttons.

BFG Edition wasn't perfect, and neither was Classic Complete, but the controls were on point, better than most old console ports.
