Very nice OP, go for it!
I love this kind of thing too, some years ago I went back and finally completed my original file on Link's Awakening, I had replayed the game several times on File 2, but File 1 always had that one old file that I dropped as a kid because I got stuck, finally went and not only finished it, but completed it to 100%, first time I did that (had to end up looking the last 2 heart pieces location though, they were both rather well hidden).
And also did the same with MM, still didn't 100% that file though, but I beat it.

Every time I replay it it's pure joy from beginning to end.

I've been replaying Link's Awakening (the original, monochrome version), and I had a blast from start to finish.
I got most of the heart pieces, and all of the upgrades blind, without looking at guides. Except I was missing 2 pieces of heart, and after wandering around the map for hours and hours, I decided to check a guide. The last 2 pieces of heart were actually kind of cryptic and I'm not sure if I would have found them otherwise. One of them was the one hidden underwater, on the southern-west part of Kanalet Castle, you have to dive there to find it. I guess it could be found randomly (I'd often swim underwater in random spots just in case, although there's only one other piece of heart hidden on a cave), and the other was hidden on a wall, in a cave with crystals west to mabe village. This one was also cryptic because there's no indication you can break that wall, unless you go checking every single tile with the sword and see if there's any sound cue, but most of the times you can break a wall, it's way more obvious than this one.
I also actually went and completed my childhood file, which is still intact since 1996, and completed it with all the hearts, I was also missing those 2 exact pieces on my old file as well.
Were you able to find these 2 heart pieces on your own by chance?
Also, there's that one spot south-west to kanalet castle (in the same screen where you find the underwater heart) that has 4 ground holes, and stairs on the other side, it is impossible to reach there with the begasus boots and roc's feather, I figured the only way to cross that part is with the flying rooster, but you can't get it back once you're done with level 7. Turns out, there's only a seashell there, and I already got the L-2 sword upgrade, so it's not mandatory, but I'd still would have liked to see that room, maybe on a next playthrough.

IMO this is better than the original box.

Just in case you didn't know, that was only an issue on the DX version, not the OG.
Either way, if you never finished it, get on it. It's one of the best Zelda games.

Link's Awakening is too obvious I think. It is the best Game Boy game, and I also think it's the best Zelda game.

Who else Player's Choice edition here?
Most people seem to have played either the original in 1993 or the colored version in 98, but who here was buying this golden GB box with a weird looking owl in the corner inviting you to an unnerving adventure in 96?

DK94 is a good contender and honestly can see how it can be considered the best.
But this little beast right here takes the spot for me.

I admit this was my first Zelda and nostalgia pays a huge factor, but Link's Awakening.

I prefer the Player's Choice version because of the owl in the cover.

Was it the superior 2D '90s Zelda game?

while I prefer the original version better, it's obvious it's due to sheer nostalgia, and I LIKE it, that's what nostalgia is about. To me, the game looks like the screenshot I posted, that's how I perceived it as a kid and how it stayed. That water there, it's not blue like in the GBC version, in my mind it's greenish, it's a swamp after all. These little details make me not like the GBC version, but of course the "definitive" is the DX, due to not only color, but extra content too.

Don't fight over stupid things like this guys.
Original's Player's Choice had the best boxart though.

I wish I still had the box for the player's choice LA. I only have the manual.

The only GB games I have complete in box are Pokemans blue and gold
