I feel like there was at least a little bit of freedom in depicting the characters up until the gamecube era though. It was really the Wii era and onward where everyone had to be painfully on-model at all times. They're even remaking games like Luigi's Mansion and the Mario & Luigi games, where super exaggerated facial animations was a focal point, and removing them.

They basically split the WL2 Time Attack into two levels for WL3; Forest of Fear (music) and the Warped Void. They're similarly unnerving but they're just not the same.
