I've had a similar experience with Gothic 2 (not exactly retro, but feels like it).

>Open world RPG
>Not even a clue about what to do in the city
>Weak as fuck
>Decide to take a look outside the city walls
>Get lost in the woods
>No map
>Spend like 40 hours just exploring the world, knowing people, living my adventurer life.
>Travels until the end of the world (literally).
>Leveled up until lv 20 (the monsters don't respawn until the end of the chapter)
>Found the best equipment of the the game even though I wasn't supposed to get them until late on the game.
>Never managed to go back to the city.

I'm not even mad, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had with an RPG
