based, really fantastic game. I'd say Vs. Balloon Fight is also good and similar, with an arguably better mini-game
I think it'd be better if Joust was widescreen so there was more flying space, but that's about all I could wish for
as for the design of the game and how they settled on ostriches, lava, eggs and everything, I'm pretty sure they did it the Nintendo way where you come up with gameplay ideas first and then worry about aesthetics after

I'd say Joust (1981) is still enjoyable, but I never play it for more than an hour
after that, Yoshi's Island (95)

if I had the machine I'd play it a hell of a lot, great game

Joust from 1982, but I only play it every couple of months and rarely for longer than 30 minutes
would play it more if I didn't have to go through an emulator. that said, arcade games just don't have much staying power to me, they're only fun in short bursts

Joust and Balloon Fight (Vs. is the best version) are great, yet so frustrating since they're both so painfully close to perfection
the ONE flaw I can think of with Joust is the nature of the screen itself, wherein you go from the edge of the right side and appear from the left and vice versa
the problem here is that you can find yourself in-between two sides, which can become confusing for orientation when you're not entirely sure which one you're in, and it's especially an issue when an enemy is right on top of you at this point
this is a much bigger problem in Balloon Fight since when an enemy falls they'll sway from side to side, making them go back and forth between both sides
as for attempting to fix this perceived flaw, I think the game being widescreen would help, since it would allow the horizontal speed to be maintained for longer
if you hit a wall on either side and bounced off that might not feel so good though, but I'm not sure how else to solve the boundary issue
also, I think the balloon run is more enjoyable than the egg swipe in Joust, and the core gameplay of Balloon is a bit more enjoyable and makes more thematic sense, since you're landing on balloons to pop them from above, but in Joust you're just playing bird-ass and not even really playing joust which is supposed to be a head-on collision at high speeds
if I knew shit about gamedev I'd make the perfect mixture of both

Joust is great, I just wish it had a widescreen variant
the only real flaw with the game is the fact you can be 'in-between' both the left and right border, sometimes it can get confusing as to which you're on
Balloon Fight is even worse with this, since dead enemies fly down in swaying left and right motion which makes them shift between both sides constantly
