One of these is wrong.

It completely depends on the game.

Chrono Trigger took the 4:3 stretching into account, so it looks squished if you play it in 8:7.

Conversely, Mario World seems designed around the internal 8:7 ratio since all subsequent releases on fixed-pixel displays use that sprite aspect ratio.

Super Metroid only has a spherical morph ball when played in 8:7.

I don't like the whine and flicker of cancer ray tubes, so I need run-ahead to remove LCD lag. I like the other features too. I keep my savestates on github :-)

Oh piss off, CRT babby. 8:7 is the intended aspect ratio for the majority of SNES games.

Why did Nintendo decide to ignore that CRT TVs were 4:3 for their Snes games, /vr/?

Some studios took this into account, but Nintendo itself which designed the console and knew how it worked, made this mistake in many 1st party games.

What's it called? Can I get one on eBay? There's probably less than 500 of these left in circulation (going by the model number on back mine is 724/1000) so I may as well have it calibrated perfectly by the probe.

My main problem is I have no idea how wide to display it. Do I try to make a perfect circle with the 240 test suite? Do I try to make a perfect circle with the built in BVM test pastern? There's a lot of conflicting info on what the SNES was intended to look like.

SNES

Did the devs intend for me to be playing at 8:7 or 4:3?

I don't know man. This guy on gamefaqs makes a pretty compelling argument to the contrary.
