>Only a handful of characters had any development or plot relevance

Despite having about 3x more characters, the Suikoden series is better in this regard because most of them have their relevance and even if not developed as characters they all have their uses and justification as army members or adding castle facilities. A war is usually a large scale event that allows for the common alignment of such diverse characters.
Of course the 108 stars of destiny is the whole point of the game so it's expected to have a better structure, and even then a few characters feel like they're throwaways.
In a game like Cross, focused mostly on a plot thread with a few core characters, it's a bit more difficult to justify the bloated roster.

tl;dr Cross large roster could work but in a (apparently) larger scale conflict

>How does it improve on the original?
To complement on what others said, the western version (including PSN version) got like 25 bugs including deleting recipes and key items. It's a complete mess and there's a patch to fix everything if you're ok with emulation

Fuck my life but can't remember this one. What is it with the timer?

Yeah, Kasumi. Mostly because I always abused Valeria in I so the kunoichi deserved more love in II. Also, dat scene with McDohl

Hard choice. Always been a fan of the dynamic duo Flit/Viktor, but love Cleo and for some weird reason, Camille. Always thought she was supposed to have some special role in the story for being so active in early game and being one of the people with special dialogue when Gremio dies then suddnely disappears.
Also, Sylvina and Tengaar are perfect waifu material.

Most problems from the first game are related to core game mechanics. The battle system is a bit repetitive (it all depends on the party setup, and you'll be constantly repeating the same unite/rune/attack patterns over and over) and the item management is a complete mess. You can't run either (unless by wasting a rune slot).

Suikoden II improves all that. The extra rune slots makes you parties way more versatile, the item management becomes more traditional with a shared inventory for the party and you can run freely. All the good things from the first game (music, sprite art, story) are vastly improved and finishing the first is worth if anything for getting the extra character in the only MC crossover in the series. The original game is a bit short so don't see the problem in trying it again, but I'm a bit biased to comment on it.

Incredibly.
I live in a country where PSX piracy reigned, so a lot of people owned this game and it's fairly popular (despite not being as famous as BoF III), but the chance to actually own the game and finally be able to load a Suikoden save to recruit McDohl without gameshark bullshit is enough for me to want getting it.

Great game overall, hope they might release all the series but seems unlikely.

So, uh.. it's ok to talk about 4-5 here?
Nobody cares about Tiershit and the other one anyway
