Red is pretty good for a first-timer, but most characters are fine. I'd avoid Riki and Lute though. Riki's is probably the hardest, and Lute's quest doesn't have much to it. Personally, I started with Blue.

Don't worry about doing everything perfectly your first time, just enjoy exploring and messing around with different things. You'll probably get lost or confused sometimes, but that's part of the fun.

I started with SaGa Frontier and loved it. Red is a good character to start with if you choose that, but anybody works (I played as Blue first).
