>Minigun alt-fire changed to be useless as shit
okay, that's bad enough in its own right, but:

>ammo-based Chainsaw
>Chainsaw uses ammo you can't even get in The Ultimate Doom
>Chainsaw uses ammo when fucking -idle-

If I was an avid BD player, I'd be fucking pissed - but given the fact that I'm not, it's just a fucking hilarious display of poor judgement. Yes, making a somewhat interesting chainsaw alt-fire was a step in the right direction - caking on all this other shit, however, is like the equivalent of doing a reverse 500 yard dash straight into a pit of nukage, spikes, and terrywads.

But real talk here:
Honestly, I think part of the problem is Mark's direction. Given his current stance in the community and his rather limited access to new graphical assets, pushing for this semi-realistic tone he says he's been aiming for not only feels inconsistent with a lot of existing material in the mod, but also ends up being a rather unrealistic goal given his available material.

The truth is, if he'd stuck with and/or returned to his more intentionally-over-the-top direction that he had in the earlier stages of development, he'd be far more equipped for that kind of tone and gameplay.

Hell, it honestly wouldn't even take much to return to that tone either - it's not like he'd have to change the gib physics/body physics back or anything - but the sprite assets that has built up over the years of the mod's development will simply never be really suited for a 'realistic' tone. In the end, it's better just to run with what you got.

You always run for cover when fighting Arch-Viles, that's what makes them stand out particularly from all the other enemies, they just have to -see- you to light you up like a Christmas tree.

You can dodge and dance (and jump and crouch in sourceports) to dodge gunfire, fireballs and rockets, but if you don't actually break their line of sight, they'll flash fry you, and then you have to keep making sure they don't undo your kills, they're a constant threat when they've become aware of you.

Goddamn they're such a fucking great monster, they're intimidating as hell, dangerous, and unusual. Adrian, Sandy and Bobby really did that monster perfectly.

>It's playing the level against it's design and bypassing the challenges the level set up for you.

I was meaning that in a half serious manner, as in, a dislike of Arch-Viles. I figure that I didn't convey that properly.

>Jumping over monsters means Pinkies are absolutely negated as a threat since they can't ever bite you or ever corner you.
I tend to not want to get close to pinkies (as they're big muscled vicious mouths), so the idea of standing on one never really occurred to me. It'd make you a tall and clear target to any surrounding ranged enemies though, so there's that. Sometimes I'd perhaps run on top of a hoard to get up at some ledge or platform, to get away from them, but I rarely get an opportunity like that even in slaughtermaps.

>You can skip almost all of any level with a single jump.
>You can rocketjump properly to actually skip massive amounts of levels.
Well I wouldn't do that, that's throwing away half the fun of the level.

>Reaching places before you're supposed to be there with ease, getting into places you shouldn't have been able to in the first place and so on.
Well, that'd really only be to get away from overwhelming hordes of monsters or heavy fire, as in, jumping through the window and then ducking down, to not die. I like exploring though, so the thought of reaching a spot the author never intended for me to is a little bit exciting.

>It was just a joke
I see.

>>1491227
It was not my intention. I'll tone it down.

>>1491238
Couldn't you just put a rocket in them and send them flying down into where the Arch-Viles are hiding? I mean, unless you're concerned with getting 100% kills, but I can't remember if you could get that in Vanilla.

Eitherway, it's a bit of a dickmove, level-design wise.

I can sympathize, Arch-Viles frighten me, because they're not just creepy and disturbing, but also a formidable enemy.

It's probably one of the best FPS monsters ever designed.

I honestly don't know what that means, but alright.

I kind of was more terrified by their idle laughter. And their evil, emaciated, unnatural appearance. An Arch-Vile skulking about in a dark, cramped area, looking for you. You'd hear his diabolical, dead-like laughter, you'd spot him streaking past a window, you'd let lose a blast from your sawed off shotgun, BOOM, missed entirely, but now a few Spectres heard you, and the Vile is still stalking you, laughing at you.

I was always real fucking scared of Arch-Viles, particularly in dark or small enclosures.

Still am. I can fight them now, but their presence makes me real fucking nervous. Something about their appearance and their idle noise, the strange laughter, it's incredibly unnerving. I commend Adrian Carmack and Sandy Petersen for making a really good monster.

Also, the Cyberdemon was always very imposing, with it's loud roar, and heavy stomping. I was always kind of afraid it'd stomp me or grab me as a kid, even if I knew it couldn't.

>they're so gloriously hard and you keep coming back for more. Its difficulty is paced well and I have yet to blame poor map design for any of my deaths, which is something a lot of other wads have problems with. There are none of those, "come on, how is anyone supposed to do this," moments for me, at least not yet.

Hit the nail on the head there.
The levels aren't just cool, they are just hard enough to be fun, I always take a mauling, but yet I manage to survive most of the times, though with slim margins.

They'd put you in an enclosed space with an Arch-Vile, and you'd be all "Oh fuck one of those scary ass motherfuckers, how will I do this?", but yet I always manage.

I mean, I can handle a Vile, but they scare the shit out of me.
