I prefer the first one as well
it is indeed much more open-worldly, has a slower pace, and is far less tense, partly because it's low-level
had few dungeons, none of which really felt like dungeons to me

i think i just love the slow-paced freedom of exploring a faux medieval california with some chill music and very little time pressure
it makes me feel like Im in the 90s again
I just wish it had better actual dungeons
some of the maps have very little to do in them, but I guess that's not inherently bad

the story and how you progress through it were done very well, I think, with the notes/letters you find, and the increasingly deadly assassins/adventuring parties hired to hunt you down; I love coming across enemy adventuring parties every so often - has a real wild west gunslinger feel to it

favorite npc's:
-kivan
-coran
-yeslick

I tend to use jaheira and khalid everytime, and I like xan though I dont find him to be very useful; imoen however is
I tend to use branwen at least for a while
I want to use baeloth the next time I play it, I'll probably do an evil run because I also want to use kagain

favorite portraits are abdel, jaheira, khalid, xan, kivan, and skie (who I've never even had in my party)

I played through the entire trilogy with an elf ftr/mage/thief using longswords/longbows and focusing on buffing/debuffing spells, had khalids pic
was tons of fun

the first game is definitely not shy about giving you powerful potions and fireball items
nothing quite like having everybody in your party shoot a fireball at a group of enemies at the same time

bg2 is definitely great, no doubt, but in a very different way
