I remember getting the original Warcraft from a friend floppy copied. I played the campaign at almost the slowest setting to ensure full awareness and proper formations to minimize casualties. I see my friends playing the game at near maximum speed over LAN against each other. I am not good at RTS, but I still enjoy them. I remember when 2 was released, not needing roads to build and boats/naval battles were a big deal back then.

In the isles of Best Buy for PC games, they'd have a dedicated island stocked full of the most recent releases and the Blizzard battle chests. Microcenter would have rows of games in the shelves sorted by alphabetical order, and you could clearly pick out the shiny battle.net edition of Warcraft 2. Fry's would have endcaps featuring Blizzard titles. Everyone was buying the games. I knew at least 7 people who played Warcraft 1, and everyone who had a computer had the sequel.

As described, shelves from your feet up above the average height of a man for rows of games. LAN parties with friends, where everyone brought their computer to join in with the weakest acting as the host. Visiting some PC cafe/arcade as a group, and encountering other skilled players to play against in Warcraft and/or cooperate in DIablo. The Blizzard games were always at the center and focus in those days.

I'm fortunate to not be in abject poverty, but budgeting on a minimum wage earnings is very difficult. Most pics are items from clearance bings, junk bins, or holiday sale items.

I raid those hidden Target clearance sections with the red tags that had prices ending in a 3c or Best Buy with a rack on the side for last few items. Hard-Off has the now famous junk bins. Most the stuff I acquired in the late 90s early 2000s because no one wanted them. As OP mentioned, it is possible I enjoy a lot more older titles because I cannot experience the newer ones. Even worse is that those clearance bins have disappeared now that games are mostly digital, so on-hand physical stock of items tend to just sell out, so there's not much more cheap new games that I could get.

My friends and their family used to play TA nonstop over their networked computers. It's like nonstop explosion sounds. I bought the commander pack because they were so obsessive with the game and it was just $11. I'm building a 98 system and I will finally try it for myself and learn its massive tech tree(s).

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I hope it will work in a J-Win98SE environment.

I am reading that site linked for that 48-bit LBA. It doesn't seem easy. As Case Four sounds most closest to how I'd want to tackle building the computer. Seems like I will have to modify the copy I got of J-Win98SE, so I'll have to look into registering ISOBuster or something. I'd probably should look into some community made service packs too, since I will not utilize any internet connectivity for my planned build. I have all these old Tokimeki Memorial screensavers, Evangelion desktop toys, Sentimental Graffiti calendars, Rurouni Kenshin background accessories, etc. to play with on old J-Windows.

However the 120GB partition for main JWin98SE install, and remainder of the 500GB SSHD dedicated to all the Win98 games I missed out on would be great. Harnessing the space from the rest of those drives, as I can have 2, does mean I also should look into what was the last version of MAME32 (before it went to MAMEUI) works on 98.

Unfortunately, at that time I was on Windows 2000 then later to XP and now 7. It is sad to see videos like "using Windows 7 in 2018" as if it is some ancient relic, but that's the lot I am stuck in. I missed out on 98/ME games. I played lots of DOS games, have many recommendations there, but Japanese games I only got the ones pictured in >>4654963 and >>4699730 just happen to be J-Win98 compatible also a bunch of eroge, lots of eroge ... and touhou shooting games. I am looking to see what else I should get into as well for this era.
