It's honestly just preference. I grew up with CRTs and always hated them and dreamt that some day I could get every pixel nice and sharp. Other people like the way a CRT blurs things together and if you don't want the hassle of old heavy hardware there are tons of shaders that try to replicate it.

Just don't let anyone else tell you what your preference *should* be and think for yourself.

>CRTs suck, but you don't think retro games look at least a little better on them? What do you think of the OP pic aside from the weird stuff on the side of the 4k TV?

No. I know this seems weird to people here, but I unironically 100% like big chunky sharp pixels. Growing up I always hated how CRTs blurred things and seeing every pixel clearly like on Gameboy for example was to me always the ideal. Even knowing some developers used the CRT blur to get certain effects, I'd still just rather see them sharp. I will admit I'm a little unusual in my tastes but I also know I'm not unique.

Emulating looks and sounds better than a crt ever did. I play for the best experience not nostalgia.

I run an emulator and use a controller I do like, but thanks for your concern Kiddo.

Exactly that's why I like it.

That's Monster World 4 and I think it looks great on my screen. You don't have to agree with my tastes though, if you like the blur of a CRT then more power to you. Personally I'm glad I have a choice now.

You know it's remarkably easy to just play games however you like and not care about the fights others get into over which displays they like.

It's a nice way to be.

Think raw pixels are beautiful and far preferable to either filters or a crt. You don't have to agree with me though.

Emulating lets me get a crisp clear image which is what my very strong preference is for. You can enjoy the brur of CRTs if you want but I have never liked them.

In general I prefer the blocky look, seeing each pixel clearly. But occasionally a non-CRT filter can give a fresh look which is fun in it's own right. Almost anything beats a CRT in my eyes though.

Because it's peddled as being this thing that ruins a game and people used to make all kinds of crazy claims like beating Punch Out was impossible on them. So now when it's brought up it's typically assumed the person is trolling about it.

I am picky and I know I'm weird about thinking they look shitty. I liked sweet arcade graphics, just not that certain glare CRTs have. I certainly did think monitors looked better, it's part of why I got into emulation in the first place, but they were still very glarey for a long time. What I use now is sort of a hybrid and been very happy with it.

I legit don't care what other people do, my best friend has a big CRT set up.

That's why I used the word personally and said we'd probably just have to agree we have different opinions.

I will say this though, I have a particular hate boner for any kind of blur which is part of why I dislike the N64 graphics so much. And why even when lag was an issue I'd rather make my games look like this than they did on a CRT.

So even with more fog, I'd take pixely jaggies over bleary smears any day. Looking at OoT on N64 practically gives me a headache. But I can totally get someone else thinking otherwise. And I'll say this, much as I think Zelda, Mario and the other full 3D world games looked awful, for some games it worked well. Smash looked good, Tetrisphere and a few others. Overall I think it looked worse than PS though.

I like it much, much, much better. But I have always hated the picture quality and light that comes out of CRTs.

I wait with baited breath for Saturn emulation to get solid enough that I can say goodbye to them once and for all.

>The problem is that they tend to have next to no influence. And, if they do have influence, they then are usually milked to death by their developer/publisher ad nauseum, or they are copied ad nauseum.

You're both contradicting yourself and pretending like that hasn't been the basis of game and genre development the whole time. You might have loved the glut of mediocre 8 and 16 bit platformers but I never did and they're no different from the iterative genre games of today. Except now there are a lot more games in a lot more genres.

But we always end up at the same place, it's glass half empty or half full. Sure not everything's great. But everything was never great. If there's more good than bad then I'm happy and I think there's way, way more good than bad.

You see it differently, but that's your choice. From what I gather there are a great many things we see fundamentally differently.

It's that special time for the image you all hate :)

I do still have a Saturn hooked up to a CRT in the other room but it's only for that. This is most of my retro gaming.

>hipsters and opportunists are rapidly driving up prices in our hobby at an absurd rate

You are exactly the same as those "hipsters and opportunists" whether you want to admit it or not. The prices are going up at their natural rate.

The mature thing to to is realize that as hobbies go (especially collecting antiques) it's still relatively cheap and that if you want things that have value to many people you will expect to pay that value.

If you don't want to collect, don't collect. Almost my whole physical collection now is a couple of Saturns, some gameboys and a few tchotchkes. It's plenty easy to keep playing old games without being a collector.

If you do want to be a collector, then go for it! But stop being such a big baby about the fact that you actually have to pay for the antiques you want. Grow up, stop being an entitled brat and be careful about what you spend your money on.

I'm the opposite. The more of my stuff I let go, the more I want to. All I have now is a couple of Saturns because emulation still sucks and I look forward to the day I can ditch them. Emulation is everything I ever wanted.

Remember that that's only about 10% of the screen and taken from a couple inches away. When you're actually playing all you see is nice clean edges.
