Only if you don't have upgraded weapons, if you manage to keep your upgrades bosses and mini bosses go down much faster. Also Morris deals more damage than Lecarde. There was this guy that used to post his 4-5 mins video of him fighting Medusa to show how bosses are boring and take a thousand hits, but it can be down in 1 min 30 if you know what you're doing.

The X68000 game too, it has downward diagonal whipping. A nice compromise considering scrolling downwards happens only once or twice in the entire game so it can't be exploited to nullify level design, but can still be used to fight some nasties.
