When I was a kid, I played both Nintendo and Sega games (and PC, as well), so I never quite understood people who think you either play mature games, or kiddy games.
To be completely honest, the most kiddy games I played as a kid were educational software, on PC. Stuff like Mario, Sonic, etc were fun games that anyone could enjoy playing, because separately from their characters or themes (which yes, were targeted at young people), the games themselves are fun, and while the characters are for kids, I think they looked ageless. Like, I could compare Sonic 1's Sonic to classic Mickey, or SMB3 Mario to classic Popeye. That kind of stuff.
Their 3D transitions also changed their old "classic" character in 2D.
But as a 9 year old, I didn't mind switching between playing Mario or Sonic to Mortal Kombat or Doom.
MK2 was probably my favorite game, even though I was a big SFII fan, when I started playing MK, I didn't want to go back to SF cause "no gore and no fatalities". I actually bought Killer Instinct because it had fatalities.

Nowdays, I don't mind some gore in my games, but I sure as hell don't look for it, I value gameplay and good game design over "mature" content. But hey, that was me being 9.
