It's not a hot take at all. We've actually got a term for it 'immersive sim' although it's a pretty crappy term and causes people who haven't played any of Looking Glass's games to argue about it. Whole thing began with Ultima Underworld being marketed as a 'dungeon simulator' rather than a typical 'dungeon crawler' (i.e. Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder) however once they did System Shock and later Thief the dungeon bit got dropped.

Yep. It's spiritual predecessor was honestly superior. Although I will admit it's hard as fuck to get into these days with it's archaic interface and old-school controls.
