Widescreen/HD crt are effectively one and the same. They suck for SD content UNLESS you use a proper scaler.
Pair something like a Sony 960 with a retrotink 5X, and you have a great set for everything from 240 to 1080i.

But if you’re not willing to deal with the price of a nice scaler (or the weight of these tubes, most are 250lbs+) then just get a standard def set

Pic rel is a 240 source being scaled to 480 in a 540 box with scanlines displayed in the native pass through mode on a 960.

The only downside to deal with is that they only come in flatscreen varieties. Which some people don’t like for CRTs, as geometry can be a little more temperamental

I love my current setup

Sony kv34xbr960 with a retrotink 5X.
hd pass through is on and all that, and the 5X is sending the display 540p for all of my retro needs
240p with true scanlines, and 480i with alternating fields. Just as god intended.

Colors are great, response time is fantastic, even fast enough for most light guns to just work natively. So it’s more than fast enough for melee and puyo.

This isn’t even to mention it’s also just a really nice screen for high res content too.

It’s limited to 1080i max, but interlaced resolutions don’t look and feel like utter dogshit on a CRT. So I’ve got my PS4 hooked up to it and couldn’t be happier

Also it’s a nice happenstance that the PS vita screen is a neat perfect fit for 1080. Being a 2x scale (sacrificing 4 lines for 1:2) and being. It’s interlaced but you can’t tell. Looks like nice crisp 540p, and is awesome for vita and PSP games. Perfect fit :D

Something else that I really appreciate is the sound system on the TV. It’s actually good! Damn good! And that’s nice because I wouldn’t have a ton of space for a nice set of speakers to go with it. So the fact that what’s built in is already fantastic is really nice

The only downside is that 1080p is not supported, and 720p is soso

1080p is easy to fix, you can get a fast interlacer to plug in things that don’t natively support 1080i (Xbox one, switch) but 720P is kinda meh. It’s the laggiest resolution at about 3 MS. (Still good compared to most TVs, but can be annoying for some games)
It gets scaled down to fit in 540 lines vertically. All horizontal resolution is there though. I’d still say it looks about as good as upscaling 720p to 1080p, which is what you’d probably end up doing anyway

Fever is cool because it’s on a bunch of platforms. And I’ve got it on all of them.
Unfortunately I don’t have all of the consoles to display every port of tsu running at once :P

And yeah it has a PIP mode built in.

The screen on the left can be any resolution. But the one on the right is limited to standard def.

It just halves the vertical resolution of both images and puts them side by side. Then you hear the audio of whatever is selected. It’s pretty handy for watching TV while gaming and stuff

The TV is a kv34xbr960. It’s what ow oils consider the absolute best of the best when it comes to consumer CRT TVs. And is certainly the best for anything that size.

People seem to overlook them because they aren’t natively very good for 240p and interlaced video. Being laggy and fugly

But with a retrotink 5X, the TV can do a pixel perfect lagless display (with real scanlines where applicable) of anything from 240p to 1080i. It’s effectively a big ass 34 inch 16:9 multi-scan monitor now. And I love it
