Blaster Master is a sidescroller where they got clever with the map design.
It starts of doing what Metroid did right: You feel at the least a little lost, but it does not go further in adopting good method.
Not to say its not fun. Most of the games that is called "metroidvanias" they are not metroidvanis are usually very solid and fun platformers, because people are misguided on what the word means.
