What the most stuck you've ever been in game?

You know - those terrible bottlenecks where it is far from clear what you have to do to advance and exercising every available option seems to do no good? And back then we didn't have online FAQs with all the answers.

So we either gave up or tortured ourselves trying to figure out that one minute little thing we weren't doing right.

For me... it was this goddamn barrell.

It ate my childhood.

It's a phenomenal game, but I have to go with the infamous carnival zone barrel. People all too often complain about game mechanics saying stuff like "omg, how was I supposed to know that" but this is a 100% legitimate example of that complaint being valid. There's no indication that standing on it and holding up makes it move up and vice versa. And it moves slightly when you land on it, so it's far more reasonable for players to assume they need to keep jumping on it in order to make it move enough, but this doesn't work. Had they put arrows on the barrel or set up some way that would indicate to the player what they need to do, it'd be okay. But they didn't.

It's a minor flaw in level design in an otherwise perfect game.

this level, specifically THIS moment.
you have to hold DOWN constantly while jumping, to force the barrel downwards.
When I played it as a kid I had to use the level cheat to skip this level because I couldn't figure it out.
I only decided to google it many years later

How has this not been posted?
There was literally NOTHING suggesting how you were supposed to move this. Everyone tried to jump from a sufficient height hoping it would work. It never did.
