Drought of games from the cancellation of X-Treme lead to Archie being given too much freedom to do whatever they wanted. From what I can tell by looking through old Sonic fansites, all Sonic autists online at the time had their OCs linked to the comics and Freedom Fighters.
Game related autism definitely started with Adventure 2 and its weird, overly edgy story, and it combining with the autism of Nintendo fans after it, and all the Sonic games before it were ported and released on GameCube

Autism related to the games. Archie is pure, unfiltered autism, but it's officially licensed fanfiction of SatAM, a very loose adaptation. They both have nothing to do with the games aside from some characters and an occasional tie-in story.
Game-related autism started with SA2 being released on the GameCube
